Year 11 students enjoy English in Careers event

Posted on: 19/12/2018

We were fortunate enough to welcome 7 speakers into school on Wednesday 19th December to speak to Y11 pupils about the benefits of English A-level in a variety of careers. Our speakers included two Oxford University alumni - Amy Creese who has just completed her PhD in Climate Science at Keble College and Samual Cohen who is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University. We also welcomed Charles Horsey from Transport for London; Tamsin Jackson, an engineer at Culham Science Centre; Kim Meddings-Curtis who works for Vodafone UK, Hayley Kinch, a physiotherapist, and, finally, it was exciting to welcome back ex-student Dr Emily Hatton-Wyatt who is now an Intensive Care Medicine registrar in Edinburgh.

Students heard about each speaker's career path and the varying ways that English A-level has benefited them including a wider cultural understanding, the ability to think critically, and good written and spoken communication. Year 11 asked some insightful questions to all of our speakers and this is an event that we will run again next year. We hope this event has encouraged even more Year11 students to consider English A-level but, mainly, we hope students enjoyed meeting professionals from a range of careers and that they have been inspired to pursue studies in whatever field interests them.
