Students attend talk from journalist and author Anita Anand

Posted on: 06/03/2019

On Thursday 28th February, Dr Khan took a small group of Year 10s and 11s to The North Wall to meet BBC journalist, TV presenter and author: Anita Anand. Anita told us about her recent book, Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary, which tells the magnificent story of a Punjabi Princess who’s life was dedicated to the freedom of women’s speech and vote. It was the most moving and eye opening story I’d ever heard personally and although I didn’t think I had enough interest in suffragettes to be able to enjoy the talk, I most definitely left in awe. As a British Asian myself, I had a real sense of pride whilst listening to Anita talk about an inspiring Asian feminist.

It was truly shocking to me that I’d never heard of Sophia Duleep Singh before, and I know a majority of the audience didn't either. I think it was so important for those who were there to hear her story. We were all transfixed throughout, only turning to each other occasionally to exchange a look of shock as the story unfolded. I’m sincerely grateful for being given the chance to go; it was a truly eye opening talk.

After the talk, we meet Anita herself. She was so kind and happily answered all of our questions regarding the book. I can say that I’m certain we all had such a great time in Oxford, meeting Anita was insane. Thank you to Dr Khan, Mr Cross (we’re sorry you couldn’t get in!) and Miss Nichols for taking us.
