DGS students awarded for their entries to Oxford University Art & Science competition

Posted on: 13/12/2018

Last term, the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division of the University of Oxford launched an art competition for Oxfordshire state school students in Years 7 to 9 for artistic responses inspired by the research of 12 Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic scientists.

This Beyond Boundaries project, funded by the University of Oxford Diversity Fund, aims to increase the visibility of Oxford’s Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) scientists and mathematicians, bridge the perceived divide between science and art, and further connect schools and local communities with the University.

The competition was promoted at DGS by Miss Thursfield, who is 2nd in the Technology & Visual Arts faculty. It was a huge success with DGS winners and runner's up raising an impressive £900 for future school STEM/STEAM cross-curricular projects, as well as personal cash prizes for students.

We are very proud to announce that on Wednesday 5th December several of our year 7s,8s and 9s were awarded a cash prize for their beautiful Artwork entries at the Museum of natural History, Oxford.

The successful winners and runner's up are:

Year 7: Evie and Maddie Southwell-Sander, runners-up in the Group category for their 'Under a Microscope' picture

Year 8: Nina Winstone, winner in the Individual category for her 'Mighty Marine Microbe'

Fiona Bull and Tabitha Gardiner, winners in the Group category for their 'Survivor' animation

Erin Wilkinson and Sophie Grainger, runners-up in the Group category for their 'Secret Scents' picture

Year 9: Beatrice Day, winner in the Individual category for her 'The very beginning' picture

Kaela Nelson, runner-up in the Individual category for her 'Seismic Solar Symphony' picture

Well done to all those who took part; it was such a privilege to see you receive your awards at the private view, and we look forward to hearing your ideas on how we can develop a STEAM collaborative project in the future.
