Citizenship students lobby MP over fuel poverty, animal cruelty and financial education
Posted on: 13/01/2025Last week, some of our Year 11 Citizenship GCSE students made the most of the opportunity to lobby Olly Glover MP as part of their Citizenship Action work. Their issues were varied and diverse with Olly being impressed by the level of thought and research that had gone into the points that they raised. This is what our pupils had to say about their meetings:
-
After interviewing Olly Glover about fuel poverty and requesting a 15% heating grant for pensioners above 65, we learnt that he is also passionate about this issue. We lobbied him in hope of this issue making it into a discussion in the Houses of Parliament, in which he agreed that pensioners that are poorer need this grant so they do not have to decide between food or heating.

We campaigned on the issue of animal cruelty. When we met Olly Glover, we expressed our thoughts on the issue and got some valuable feedback from him. He said he would write to the Baroness - a Member of the Hose of Lords whom we had emailed previously but had not received a reply from - for which we are grateful

We lobbied Olly Glover to help us with our campaign about making it statutory for all schools to teach more on Financial Education. He stated that it was a concerning and important issue regarding young people. He agreed to raise this issue in Parliament to help support our cause.
It was great to have Olly's time and thoughts on each issue and we are very grateful to him for this. The girls' presentations were of a high standard and I'm sure you would agree are very worthy of his support.
