Please enjoy the Thought for the Term from Mrs Hodkinson

Education is a precious gift that every child should have the opportunity to receive. It is through education that we acquire knowledge, skills, and values that enable us to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society. Since joining DGS in January, I have been incredibly impressed by the way in which the students and teachers work so hard together to promote curiosity, critical thinking, and a thirst for knowledge.

Appreciating education is about recognising the many benefits that it offers. Education opens doors to opportunities that would otherwise be closed. It equips us with the tools we need to succeed in life, including the ability to communicate effectively, challenge ourselves, and make informed decisions; as I often say to our students, ‘school isn’t just about the things you learn in the classroom’. I’m a great believer that education promotes personal growth and self-awareness, which are crucial for developing empathy, compassion, and resilience.

Education is also the foundation of a healthy democracy. As I dismiss my Year 12s after our Wednesday afternoon lessons, my Sixth Formers wrestle through a large group of excitable students who are waiting to enter the room to start Student Council. It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm to participate in the after-school club, and it’s with a wistful sense of aspiration that I cast my eye amongst the crowd in the hope that some of them use the skills they learn at school to engage in the UK’s political process and become our future leaders.

Earlier this term, we had our first ever ‘Culture Week’ at DGS and SBS, led almost entirely by our excellent Diversity Leaders at both schools, with thanks to Dr Khan for her oversight. The week consisted of a series of talks, videos and conversations for tutor time and assemblies about many different cultures – food, languages, clothes and dance. This built up to the much anticipated ‘Culture Evening’ on 5th May which was a fantastic event. This type of education, the type that builds inclusion and understanding and really does break down walls and barriers within our community, is vital in our schools and shows us all how education can have an impact that lasts. By instilling in our children and students a deep appreciation for all education, we are not only preparing them for academic success but also for a fulfilling and meaningful life as part of the community in Didcot and beyond.
