DGS celebrates World Book Day!

Posted on: 06/03/2023

To mark this year's World Book Day, the Reading Ambassadors ran events and competitions throughout the week beginning 27th February.

On Monday and Tuesday, a Word Hunt saw students searching for literary questions posted throughout the Cockcroft building. The first letter of each of these questions then had to be unscrambled to reveal a mystery phrase!

Heartstopper library 2On Wednesday, the library was decorated in true 'Heartstopper' style to host colouring, quizzes and drawing workshops inspired by Alice Oseman's phenomenally popular graphic novel series.

On Friday, the Reading Ambassadors, inspired by the 'Murder Most Unladylike' series, set up a trail of clues around the library to help students solve the (fictional) mystery of who murdered Mrs Barnes! Suspects included Dr Suggate, unhappy that he had not been allowed to publish his autobiography in the library; Year 9 student Skye, who had not been permitted to borrow a restricted book; and Mr Mangan who was overcome with jealousy at not being the school librarian!

JXP dinoWe also held our annual costume competition, which saw great numbers of students across all year groups dressed as a favourite book character. We were especially impressed by the efforts of 7JXP, who all dressed in the theme of 'Jurassic Park' with many rangers employed to keep a couple of unruly dinosaurs in check! It was incredibly hard to choose the winners, which will be announced to students in assemblies this week.

All in all, it was great to see so many students enjoying our book-themed activities, and winning prizes and house points in the process. We're looking forward to next year already!
