Miss Roberts' Thought for the Term

Posted on: 07/01/2022

The theme for this term is care. It could be an important theme for any time of year, but it is particularly valuable to reflect on it in January, a month that few would identify as their favourite. Whilst some relish the sense of new beginnings and the excitement of a new year, others find it more difficult to feel motivated after the Christmas holidays and on dark mornings. More than ever, holding dear to principles of self-care and care for others are essential at this time of year.

Self-care is deliberately prioritised in the sentence above. You will have heard of the phrase ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’; the idea being that we must take care of ourselves in order to take care of others. To extend kindness, generosity and care to others, you must first show yourself love and compassion. Self-care is as simple as planning regular things that you enjoy and find relaxing. Whether it’s exercising, having a bath, watching a film or enjoying your favourite food or drink, these moments will sustain and energise you. One of my January rituals is to book some events to look forward to over the coming months. Looking forward to these events offers the promise of exciting days to come and is one of my self-care activities.

Alongside prioritising these self-care activities, you can look outwards and think about how you can demonstrate care for others. Even the smallest gesture of a smile, asking someone if they’re okay, or making them a cup of tea can make a big difference to others.

No doubt the year ahead will bring challenges alongside excitement and opportunities, but like so many others, I feel strengthened and optimistic knowing that I am part of a kind, compassionate and caring community.
