Science Club wins Outstanding STEM Club at STEM Inspiration Awards
Posted on: 14/11/2018The STEM Inspiration Awards recognise and celebrate individuals, organisations and clubs working to inspire young people in STEM subjects. This year’s award ceremony was held at the House of Lords on 1st November, when the shortlisted nominees were recognised for their inspirational work.
Six schools were shortlisted from as far afield as Cornwall, Scotland and Gibraltar, but Didcot Girls’ School Science Club was awarded the prize for Outstanding STEM Club. Dr Nickerson, Science Club Coordinator, was presented the award by Lord Sainsbury who said “Didcot Girls’ School Science Club is an after-school club open to all students, providing practical hands-on science experience in a fun and supportive environment. The success of previous attendees of DGS Science Club, is an example of exactly what I had hoped for when I set up the scheme many years ago.” The DGS Club has been running for over 20 years and many former members are now studying STEM in further or higher education or pursuing STEM careers, with many involved in STEM outreach as well.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) sponsored the 2018 STEM Inspiration Awards and is sending the winners to the world-renowned CERN in Switzerland! Two teachers and 4 students from DGS will have the opportunity to see cutting-edge science in action, as well as meet top engineers, technicians and physicists from across the facility.
Yvonne Baker, Chief Executive of STEM Learning said:
“These people and organisations provide the much-needed spark that ignites young people’s enthusiasm for STEM. All our winners have excelled in their fields and I am delighted that we can recognise and celebrate their expertise and passion.”
